ARCHEOWINE - ARCHAEOLOGICAL FLAVORS IN THE LAND OF LIBARNA
3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS
Serravalle Scrivia
Description A historical-archaeological food and wine route starts from the Roman city of Libarna and will take the tourist to discover the local products which continue to be the most authentic expression of the past.
In this corner of Piedmont which embraces Liguria and from where the Apennines look onto the sea, the key protagonists are the two great wines of the area: the Gavi Docg and the Timorasso Terre di Libarna. The ancient flavors and the stories connected to the wine production of this area will be revealed by the artisans of taste, producers and companies which make their outstanding products from the Archeosapori.
Program
Day 1
Arrive to Gavi Ligure, check in to b&b or agriturismo and lunch at leisure.
Walk in the old village (awarded Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club) along the streets flanked by colourful houses of the centre to reach the beautiful Church of San Giacomo, example of Romanesque architecture. Climb towards the FORT for a guided tour of the polygon-shaped fortress built between the 16th and 17th century.
The itinerary continues with a visit to a fully organic winery, where one of the flagship products is the Cortese Gavi Docg obtained from fermentation and ageing in terracotta amphorae. To follow,
tasting in winery.
Return to Gavi - Dinner in osteria with traditional local dishes.
Day 2
After breakfast, the day begins in Libarna with visit to the ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA of the Roman city built in 148 BC along the via Postumia which connected Aquileia with Genoa. You will cross the history of the city together with the story of the ancient flavours and production/trade of wine to reach the present day with the Archeosapori, those foods and products which have adapted and transformed through the centuries and are still present on our tables.
Continue with the visit to the MUSEUM OF LIBARNA which is home to archaeological artefacts found in the site and bear witness to the everyday life of the Roman city.
Stop-off with the Archeosapori in a pastry shop where you will taste gallette and "tessellae" of spelt and the ‘bacio di Libarna’ (made with honey and hazelnuts, ingredients already used by the Romans to make desserts).
Always in Serravalle, a quick lunch in search of the Archaeosapori with stop-off to enjoy the traditional farinata, a very simple product based on chickpea flour water salt and olive oil baked in a wood oven.
In the early afternoon, reach the municipality of Voltaggio, one of the most "Ligurian-like" of the province of Alessandria whose Roman origin comes from the passage of the ancient via Postumia, the centre of trade for products arriving from the port of Genoa. Following a walk around the historic centre with stop at the Romanesque Paganini bridge over the River Lemme and a visit to the Church of S. Maria Assunta, we will discover the small gem of the ART GALLERY OF THE CAPUCHIN CONVENT, home to precious paintings by Ligurian, Piedmont and Lombard painters.
On the way back, stop in the village of Carrosio to taste the amaretti, almond-based biscuits, which have been skilfully made by four generations and earned the prestigious brand of excellence De.Co. Possibility to taste the amaretti by appointment and also watch their production.
Return to Gavi, free time to enjoy an aperitif in the wine bars of the centre.
Dinner in agriturismo.
Day 3
After breakfast, visit another excellent winery of the area where Cortese Gavi Docg vinified in amphora is also produced alongside the regular wines.
To conclude our visit, a 1 km walk on paved road from the centre of Bosio will take us to the Big Orange Bench, number 84 of the circuit devised by the American designer Chris Bangle. The bench is located on the hill of Ronco and
from its breathtaking view over the vineyards you can catch a glimpse of Mount Tobbio and its ancient Church.
Before returning home, opportunity to stop off in Serravalle Scrivia to shop
at the Serravalle Designer Outlet,
one of the largest in Europe.
