Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo
The Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park, part of the Protected Areas of the Piedmont Apennines, is situated between Liguria and Piedmont, on the geological border between the Alps and the Apennines, and was created to promote and preserve a site of great environmental value. Visitors can travel numerous nature trails along the banks of the Lavagnina lakes (artificial reservoirs) or climb the slopes of Mount Tobbio and enjoy breathtaking views over the Ligurian Sea. There is a large presence of reptiles and amphibians; eight species of snake and the Italian cave salamander which lives in the disused mines in total darkness. The Park's streams and brooks are home to the river trout and the freshwater prawn, a crustacean which has become quite rare and is present in only a few waterways. The Park is also the nesting ground for different species of birds and an important stopping site on migratory routes: one of the most important birds of prey is the short-toed eagle that primarily feeds on reptiles. This imposing bird, at risk of extinction, nests in pairs inside the Park and has become a symbol of the Protected Area.
