Chiesa di Santa Maria di Viatosto

The current church is a 14th-century reconstruction of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Riparupta (11th century). Inside, with three naves and cross vaults supported by pillars with carved sandstone capitals, recent restorations have revealed beautiful frescoes dating from the 13th to the 16th century, predominantly depicting breastfeeding Madonnas (the church was likely a place of female devotion to ask for the grace of childbirth and the gift of milk). Other interesting works include a 14th-century wooden Madonna and a painted sandstone sculpture group from the 15th century. The churchyard offers an excellent vantage point over the city and the hills.
