Cattedrale di Sant'Evasio

Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Cathedral of Sant’Evasio was consecrated in 1107. The gabled façade is almost entirely the result of the radical reconstruction work carried out between 1859 and 1861 by the architect Edoardo Arborio Mella. The interior, subdivided into one nave and four aisles, retains the original Romanesque layout. The narthex, the finest piece of architecture of the cathedral, has reached us intact. Consisting of four intersecting stone arches that support a massive vault, held up by its interlocking shape, it presents a rare structure similar to Islamic and Armenian matrices. Inside the church itself, the bright opening of the lantern tower stands out, illuminating the large wooden crucifix from the Rhenish school dating to the 13th century that is covered in silver foil. In the ambulatory, there are a number of Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, bas-reliefs and fragments of a mosaic pavement that belonged to the 12th century church. The Chapel of Sant' Evasio, designed in the 18th century in an elliptical shape by Benedetto Alfieri, opens up in the right transept. No visits during religious services. USEFUL INFO ON ACCESSIBILITY The Cathedral of Sant' Evasio is wheelchair accessible thanks to the presence of a ramp.
